Car care,in plain words.

When do brake pads need changing?

3 min read

Most pads have a small metal tab that squeals when they wear thin. That squeal is the warning, and it usually gives you a few weeks. If the squeal turns into a grinding sound, the pad is gone and metal is touching the disc: that wears the discs fast and costs more to fix.

Other signs: the pedal feels soft or sinks, the car pulls to one side when you brake, or the steering wheel shakes when you slow from speed. Each one is worth a check.

How long pads last depends on how and where you drive. Lots of stop-start driving wears them faster than open-road kilometres. We measure them at every service and tell you roughly how much life is left, so it’s never a surprise.

Five signs your battery is on the way out

2 min read

  • The engine turns over slowly on a cold morning.
  • You hear clicking but the engine doesn’t start.
  • Lights or the dashboard dim when you start the car.
  • There’s white or green powder around the terminals.
  • The battery is more than three or four years old.

A battery test takes a few minutes and tells you how much strength it has left. Replacing a weak battery on your terms beats waiting for it to fail in a car park.

Logbook servicing and your new-car warranty

2 min read

You don’t have to go back to the dealer to keep your new-car warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, an independent workshop can service your car, as long as the service follows the manufacturer’s schedule and uses parts and fluids that meet their specifications.

We follow your logbook, use parts to the right specification and stamp the book, so your service history stays complete for the warranty and when you sell.

The dashboard lights that matter most

3 min read

Red means stop soon. Oil pressure, temperature, brake and battery lights in red mean something needs attention now. Pull over safely, switch off and call.

Orange means book it in. The engine light, ABS and tyre pressure lights in orange or yellow mean a fault has been found. The car usually drives, but get it checked within days.

A flashing engine light is different. It usually means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Drive gently and get it looked at straight away.

Why a transmission service matters

2 min read

Automatic gearboxes run on fluid that cools, cleans and lets the gears change smoothly. Over time it breaks down and collects wear particles. Old fluid is one of the most common reasons for slipping, late or harsh gear changes.

Changing the fluid and filter at the interval in your logbook costs far less than repairing a gearbox. If yours already feels off, bring it in early: the sooner it’s looked at, the more likely a service is all it needs.

Before a long drive: a ten-minute check

2 min read

  • Tyres: pressure set cold, tread above the wear bars, no cracks or bulges. Check the spare too.
  • Oil and coolant at the right level.
  • Washer fluid topped up and wipers clearing cleanly.
  • All lights working, including brake lights.
  • Anything odd lately? A noise, a light, a pull? Get it checked before you go, not halfway there.

Heading away over summer? Book a check a week or two before you leave, so there’s time to fix anything we find.
